Just Thoughts!

This came to me yesterday – last night

(I don’t think the circumstances really matter)

It was

“Those are only thoughts.”

Whoa.

So liberating.

Such a relief!

It helps you stand back a foot or so

From the noisy show going on inside your head

to say to yourself

“Those are only thoughts.”

Somehow, then, you expand

with that …

thought.

Your chest expands

Some concrete falls off your shoulders

Ahhhhhhh.

I was tired, sooooo tired

still had to get back home

from Whitby to Toronto

take the GO train

stand at the bus stop

waiting for a bus, in the cold

& I could drive myself crazy with all the “OMG I’m so tired so tired so tired”

(or 101 other oppressive & un-cheery thoughts)

but instead I kept reminding myself

Those are only thoughts.

then I could stand in the cold

(it wasn’t even all that cold, really! & it started to snow, & it was kind of pretty, actually, once I got that crabby naggy voice to hush up)

& instead of saying

“OMG OMG OMG I’m so tired it’s so cold I want to be home I want to be home”

I would say again

Those are only thoughts

& then the bus came

(quicker than I’d feared for that hour of the night)

& I knew I’d soon be home

in my own warm bed

with a new gem in my possession

in these days so dark (often) with fears of so many sorts

Remind myself: “Those are only thoughts.”

then breathe

expand

feel grateful, relieved…

🙂 🙂 🙂

p.s. of course if I was a good Buddhist, or regular meditator, I’d have put this into faithful practice years ago. Decades ago! But I’m not, & I’m not, & I didn’t. & you know? Better late than never, better late than never…

p.p.s. some helpful (& very brief!) words about managing our thoughts & emotions.Managing Feelings

p.p.p.s. & now, many weeks have gone by since I wrote down these … thoughts, & I still do this, & sometimes it works really well, & sometimes it hardly “works” at all – but still, it does always help a little, & even a little is a lot better than nothing at all!

‘Quote for today’: “You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. That’s a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That’s the only thing you should be trying to control.” – Elizabeth Gilbert (Free Will on Dec. 23/15 )

“People are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them.” – Epictetus

“Men are not troubled by things themselves, but by their thoughts about them.” –Epictetus [another way I have heard it put, at any rate]

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” –Eckhart Tolle in A New Earth – Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose

“The criteria for success: you are free, you live in the present moment, you are useful to the people around you, and you feel love for all humanity.” – Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

“Whenever you are angry, be assured that it is not only a present evil, but that you have increased a habit.” – Epictetus

“Hoard each joyous moment that comes to you.

No one knows how it will all end.”
