October 24th: Please Raise Your Voice!!

I posted an item back in June called ‘October 24th: We’re ALL Invited!’ about the upcoming International Day of Climate Action (you can find that post in the blog Index).

Now it’s only a week away!!

This special day is the brainchild of a very illustrious group of individuals who make up the group 350.org (350 being the parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere considered safe for Planet Earth, & btw, we are already over this amount).

The Copenhagen meetings coming up in December are considered absolutely critical in getting the message to the world’s politicians that: “the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis.  If an international grassroots movement holds our leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global transformation we so desperately need.” [from the 350.org Web site here ]

I happen to be from Canada, where our so-called “leader” (Prime Minister Stephen Harper) is completely and utterly out of touch with what needs to be done about climate change. He has made our country a pariah on the world stage. It’s embarrassing to be a Canadian, the way he is behaving and representing us. (Lots of us would like to see Mr. Harper turfed out of office; trust me!)

Well. Lots of people I know here are going to “raise a ruckus” on October 24th.

Some of us will go to Ottawa, our capital city, and gather on Parliament Hill for a fun day – joining with thousands of others – many of them young people – who are equally concerned about climate change. I’m looking forward to it!

For more information about that (including how to get there & where to stay), go to http://cday.atypical.ca/about/

Others I know will gather at Queen’s Park in Toronto – our provincial legislature.

For information on that, go to http://torontoclimatecampaign.org/ This sounds like a fun event also! It’s always inspiring and energizing to gather with a large crowd of likeminded individuals and feel the collective energy and spirit of people who give a darn & are willing to do something about it.

I sure hope wherever YOU are, you plan to raise a bit of a ruckus on October 24th!

If you’ve remained silent and inactive on the climate change issue up to now, this is a perfect opportunity to join in!

Please also sign the KYOTOplus petition that is supported by 60+ organizations. For a one-minute YouTube about this, go here

Then go to http://www.kyotoplus.ca/ to see a comprehensive list of the organizations that support this initiative.

Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute has said, “Saving our civilization is not a spectator sport.”

Guy Dauncey, author of Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change has said, “The message, so firmly, is – don’t give up. Don’t hang with the cynics, the angry-hearted, the whiners, the blamers, the negative minded. Hang with those who believe in love, hope, and beauty – and then work with them to make this a reality. This is our planet. This is our time. This is our call to action.”

And a clever ad I saw in the Watershed Sentinel magazine said “Talk – Action = Zero.”

Let’s not be as full of hot air as our politicians, hmm?

Please join in with millions around the world, & raise your voice on October 24th !!

P.S. I will grant you, btw, that action requires energy, but it also generates energy. It makes you feel good, is a surefire despair-buster, & it always makes you want to do more. Go for it!
